The Australian Open Grand Slam Tennis Tournament

The Australian Open is the first of Grand Slam tennis tournaments held to coincide with the summer down under in January. Held for the first time in 1905 the tournament was originally contested on grass but has been played on hard counts since 1988.

  • Since 1905, the Australian Open has been staged in five Australian and two New Zealand cities as follows: Melbourne (54 times), Sydney (17 times), Adelaide (14 times), Brisbane (7 times), Perth (3 times), Christchurch and Hastings (once).
  • Held in the middle of the Australian summer, the Australian Open can have extremely hot days. An extreme-heat policy is put into play when temperatures reach dangerous levels.
  • From 1972 it has been held in same place, the Korong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne, selected because Melbourne attracted the biggest patronage. The two main courts used in the tournament are Rod Laver Arena and Hisses Arena and feature retractable roofs, which are shut during rain or extreme heat.
  • Melbourne Park (formerly Flinders Park) was constructed for the 1988 tournament to meet the demands of a tournament that had outgrown Korong’s capacity.
  • The first Open tournament, held in 1969, was won by Australian Rod Laver and the current men’s champion is Roger Feeder. For the women, the first Open tournament was won by Australian Margaret Court and the current women’s champion is Serena Williams.
  • The women’s singles winner is presented with the Daphne Oakhurst Memorial Cup. The men’s singles winner is presented with the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.
  • Since 1969 the record for the most wins in the men’s tournament is held jointly be Andre Agassi and Roger Feeder with four wins. The most wins for women are the five wins of Serena Williams.

As the first of the Grand Slam tournaments, the Australian Open is seen as the bell weather event in tennis. A good start to the tennis year down under bodes well for the remaining big trophies.

What Is a Badminton Drill?

A Badminton Drill is quite simply a practice.

No, not practicing by playing or knocking a few shuttles across the net to your partner. A Badminton Drill is a practice. It’s a practice of a specific skill or element required to play badminton. The Badminton drill can take many forms but will usually focus on taking a small and specific area on which to work.

Let me give an example from my own style of play, I invariably have my racquet ‘down’ either to the side or in front, even when at the front of the court. But a far better position for the racquet and me as I’m well over six foot, is to have my knees slightly bend and the racquet head raised to shoulder or head height. I need to Drill this habit into my head. So my partner and I play the ‘patty cake’ game, both stand just back of the front service line and try hitting the shuttle as horizontal and as close to the net tape as possible.

It becomes a ‘game’ when there are no rules, i.e. freedom to hit shuttle on either forehand or backhand. It becomes a Drill when you continually just do forehand. It can be further broken down into say, near forehand and far forehand.

Badminton drills are better than practice as they are more specific to particular areas and should be done over a considerable amount of time. An hour spent on a particular Badminton drill is nothing, and what’s more it should be regularly repeated throughout the training regime.

Another Badminton drill might be ‘mid court backhand cross net return’, bit of a mouthful that, but if your partner can deliver the shuttle to the right area this is easily practicable, but the main purpose of the drill could be to get you to change from a forehand grip to a backhand grip!!..

A Badminton drill is a very useful training technique and is simply a repetition of a small but necessary skill.

Thank Goodness for fall and Winter Sports

Yes, it was a wonderful summer and it was hard to say goodbye to all those long, lazy, warm days when the sun came up very early and didn’t set until very late. There was time to do all those things that we sometimes find it hard to do in the winter months when the days are significantly shorter and when the sunshine seems very scarce. We’ve had to say goodbye to that great time of year and we know we’re going to have to forge through long winter months before we see that warm weather again. Before we get too depressed, however, we must recognize that there really are a lot of great things about the cooler weather months too.

This year most of us have been able to enjoy a beautiful fall with weather that has made it possible for people to continue with the sports that they played throughout the summer months. We’re still seeing biker’s everyday and the fields are full of kids and adults playing baseball and soccer. For the most part, people have been able to continue doing those things that they love. Besides that, the changing seasons have brought back some of the sports that we’ve missed during the summer months. Football, which is one of the most popular of all sports, is in full swing and the stadiums are full of excited fans who love nothing more than supporting their favorite teams. Many people find that it is one of the great pleasures of life to be in a stadium on a cool, autumn day (or evening) surrounded by people they enjoy being with, treats in hand and watching their team try to come up with a win out on the field. As much as we loved summer, it didn’t offer that particular enjoyment.
