Thank Goodness for fall and Winter Sports
Yes, it was a wonderful summer and it was hard to say goodbye to all those long, lazy, warm days when the sun came up very early and didn’t set until very late. There was time to do all those things that we sometimes find it hard to do in the winter months when the days are significantly shorter and when the sunshine seems very scarce. We’ve had to say goodbye to that great time of year and we know we’re going to have to forge through long winter months before we see that warm weather again. Before we get too depressed, however, we must recognize that there really are a lot of great things about the cooler weather months too.
This year most of us have been able to enjoy a beautiful fall with weather that has made it possible for people to continue with the sports that they played throughout the summer months. We’re still seeing biker’s everyday and the fields are full of kids and adults playing baseball and soccer. For the most part, people have been able to continue doing those things that they love. Besides that, the changing seasons have brought back some of the sports that we’ve missed during the summer months. Football, which is one of the most popular of all sports, is in full swing and the stadiums are full of excited fans who love nothing more than supporting their favorite teams. Many people find that it is one of the great pleasures of life to be in a stadium on a cool, autumn day (or evening) surrounded by people they enjoy being with, treats in hand and watching their team try to come up with a win out on the field. As much as we loved summer, it didn’t offer that particular enjoyment.
Another one of those great sports that was absent during the summer months but which is now just beginning a long season is basketball. If you are an NBA fan then you’re happy to know that there are still nearly 80 games to be played before the play-offs begin in late spring. For those of us who live in cold climates, the basketball season is particularly appreciated and looked forward to as a way to help in getting us through those very long months of winter. When we’re leaving the house in the morning while it is still dark and getting home (even if it’s before 5:00) and still having it dark, it’s nice to have something to look forward in the evening hours. Maybe that’s why those NBA games are so popular. You can usually find one team or another playing on any given night. So, while it’s true that many of us still lamenting the passing of summer and all the great times that we associate with that time of year, we can be reassured that there are still lots of great sports that will be available to us during the fall and winter months.
