Basic Boxing Punches

Boxing is a great all around conditioning workout and there are basic boxing punches that you should take the time to learn. Boxing for fitness and fat loss still requires that you are able to move well, keep your hands up and stay strong throughout the workout. But first things first, you need to learn how to thrown a punch properly.

Jab – The (left) jab, while it is on of the least powerful punches, is quite possibly the most important punch in a boxers artillery. Don’t just take my word for it, according to fight statistics; the great Mohammad Ali used jabs more than 90% of the time. Even though they aren’t strong punches they set you up for bigger combos where you can use your power punches below. Because they are a bit weaker and a little more un-natural than other punches it can take a little longer to learn how to throw a jab.

Cross – The (right) cross is the quickest and most direct way to hit an opponent. It will be one of the strongest punches you will use. Because it is easy to learn and is so powerful we us it a lot in boxing combinations. It will be used more than the other power boxing punches and this is the same when it comes to boxers in the ring. In fact the right cross is one of the most preferred knockout punches by many boxers.

The target of the cross is the head of the opponent and provides a fairly good amount of damage when set up by a job or used in combos. These combos can be done for power or speed depending on your training goals. When it follows a jab, this combo is called the “one-two” combination. Simple to learn and very effective (both in the ring and for your home boxing workout).

Hooks – A hook is usually aimed at the chin and can only be done effectively by swinging the arm in a horizontal arc. The wrist and elbow need to be aligned so that you can transfer the power through the punch and not risk injury. Hooks work best when they are set up by a jab and followed by an uppercut or another hook. The hook is another powerful punch (especially from the right) and it has knockout power. The hook is probably the hardest to learn out of all of the basic boxing punches but it is well worth the time getting it right.

Don’t Let Anyone Push You Around

Do you ever get the feeling that people just don’t respect your ability to stand up for yourself in a physical confrontation? It’s not very much fun to always be on the defensive, worried that the aggressive bullies of the world are going to pick you as their next target.

And while most of them don’t actually resort to violence, the threat of a good beating is always there, just below the surface.

But if you’ve been around, you know that bullies and want to be tough guys usually don’t pick on everyone. They pick and choose their victims, based on how hard they think it would be to beat that person in a fight. So the key to avoiding becoming the target of a lowlife bully is to become confident in your ability to stand up for yourself. Because once you back down, you’re going to always be a target.

Some basic boxing training is a great way to gain the self-confidence and physical ability that you need to stand up to bullies. This is because, in a fair fight, most boxers are way better able to handle themselves than untrained thugs. Boxers know how to move so their punches always land with maximum power, while the other guy’s wild swings never seem to connect and do damage.

Think of it this way: for more than a century, guys have made their living as boxers. These guys need to put food on their family’s table, and they need to be able to keep fighting for years and years, so they can get enough money to retire comfortably. Most importantly, they have to be able to defend themselves well enough so they don’t look like chumps in the boxing ring.

In short, boxers know all the techniques that work. Everything a boxer does in training, he does because it’s been proven to work in a sport where the weak end up unconscious, on their backs, in complete humiliation (and with a starving family).

So take it from me when I tell you that learning some boxing techniques is worth your while. There is no sensationalism in boxing. The guys who made this sport what it is only do the things that have been proven to work. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t pay the bills. And if it’s not worth doing, it doesn’t get done.

Pacquiao Vs Margarita Fight 2010

November 13, 2010, this Saturday at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas is the fight of all fights and the night of all nights as Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarita will fight against each other for the vacant WBC Light Middleweight title. They will make yet another boxing history as Manny Pacquiao will fight for his 8th title, hoping to take away Antonio Margarita’s chance to win the title and gain redemption. The Pacquiao vs. Margarita fight will give us entertainment as Pacquiao, one of the most celebrated athlete in our time, faces another bigger opponent on the ring as he fights for another division.

Style

Pacquiao greatest assets are his fists not to mention its quickness that can target and blow up a face with one combination which has proven in his previous fights to be destructive. His left punch is a dynamite weapon while his right can do the same damage as well. His control during the fight using his feet and his natural habitat in the ring has made this Filipino southpaw very hard to defeat. Standing at 5’6″ with a 67 inch reach and with a weight if 150 pounds he is still very small for a welterweight even for a junior middleweight. Margarita on the other hand, known to be a slugger, takes the fists of his opponent only to unleash his warrior-side. He doesn’t take chances as he throws a lot punches not just on the face but also to the body as well. His greatest weapon is his left hook which has proven to be cause damage to the body. He is a passionate fighter who gives his best on the ring and finishes the task with great enthusiasm. Despite his loss to Mosley, he has remained steadfast. Standing at 5’11″ with a 73 inch, his size will always remain an advantage against Pacquiao.

Profile

Critics find it difficult to look for loopholes in Pacquiao recent matches. When he lost to Morales back in 1999 marked the last memory of him ever defeated. As he ascended to higher weight class divisions from David Diaz on 2008 to Joshua Clotty last year, he has become a better fighter and more difficult to knock down. He was able to step up in his career when most of the top fighters in boxing were going down. Margarita was doing quite well before his fight with Shane Mosley. His big win over Miguel Cotton gave him a seat on top of boxing. His career was in good form when the unexpected encounter with Shane Mosley which showed imminent disaster attached to his name. The loaded gloves issue placed his career under intense scrutiny. He made a modest comeback in Mexico which was his first win in the past two years.
