Breaking Down the Denver Broncos Problems under McDaniel’s

Breaking down the Denver Broncos problems is not a difficult task. There appear to be many problems, but really it boils down to a basic problem with player replacement and selection.

Two years ago the Broncos under Mike Shanahan had a top offense that scored a middling number of points. That offense consistently cranked out thousand yard rushers using a zone blocking scheme. The passing portion of the offense was also excellent. Shanahan’s offenses were known for quickly scoring, thus making it easier for the defense.

Today, McDaniel’s also has a top offense that scores a middling number of points. The difference is the new power blocking scheme has resulted in a historically bad running offense. The Broncos are not simply last in the league; they are last by a long ways. Take away one good rushing game and the remainder does meet the definition of being historically terrible. As a result the passing game has had to make up the slack. Unfortunately, McDaniel’s’ offense is not scoring at all the first time it gets the ball. Or the second time. Or at any time in the first quarter. The result is a team that gets behind, starts passing more, gives up on the run, and puts tremendous pressure and stress on the defense.

It has been much publicized that McDaniel’s got rid of pro-bowlers Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall. But other offensive players have left who have then shined on other teams, such as Peyton Hollis and Ryan Train.

In two drafts McDaniel’s has spent 3 first round picks on a running back, a wide receiver, and a quarterback. Essentially, 3 first rounds pick to replace skill position players he has let go or forced off the team. Another way of thinking about this: 3 new players to replace trusted veterans.

As a result of ‘wasting’ first round picks on positions that should have already been solid, talent for the remainder of the team positions has gone neglected.

Imagine instead the existing talent, plus 3 first round picks used on offensive and defensive lineman. That would be a much stronger team. Instead, rather than getting better through the draft the Broncos have not even kept even because rookies typically cannot immediately replace proven veterans.

Thoughts on How to Increase Your Vertical Leap from a Professional Athlete

The other day I was driving around at lunch-time listening to Jim Rome on the radio. He was interviewing a pro football player for the Baltimore Ravens and was talking to him about the Ravens chances for winning the super bowl this season. After a few minutes of chatting the topic turned to off-season conditioning programs where Rome said “Is it true you improved your vertical leap 8 inches this off-season?” When the player answered that he had Rome half jokingly suggested that the player should create a workout tape or routine and was dying to know the answer of how he did it. What was the answer…”I simply jumped” was the player’s response.

As the two men continued to talk the player discussed how it happened and how he finally decided to make it a point of emphasis for himself as an athlete. In the past he had worked out muscles to make himself stronger and faster and it had worked so why not the same for jumping. “I simply jumped” was his answer.

I’ve done research since and found that it wasn’t just any kind of jumping but specific jumping. Warm-ups were always done with jumping rope but no vertical leap could be improved by simply jumping an inch off the ground. Imagine trying to improve your bench press by only lifting the bar each time. It just wouldn’t get you the results you were looking for. He would box jump or platform jump and with each set he would push himself to go higher and higher much like you would with any other exercise that you are trying to improve. He simply didn’t set the box at 24 inches and work on that all summer long. He constantly reached a plateau and then worked to beat it. The most common theme was the fact that he treated jumping like any other strength training exercise and jumped.

How many of us are willing to put the time and effort into this part of our game or athletic ability to improve? Just as some people are born with better natural strength, others are born as better natural jumpers. In my own terms, it takes me months to really improve my bench press as I don’t have great natural strength. I have to truly work at it. Meanwhile, I’m much faster than most people and that has come naturally to me so this all makes sense. What do we do with what we are given and what do we do to improve what we weren’t given? That is what truly separates the professional athletes from the rest of us.

Sand Shot Tips

Sand shots are often viewed as very difficult shots; however, if you follow the simple rules and tips outlined below, you will become more consistent out of the sand, and as a result, become a better player.

Sand Shot Laws

  • Sand shot with a good lie (the ball sits up on top of the sand) should be played closer to your front foot, as opposed to sand shot with a bad lie, which should be played closer to your back foot.
  • If you position the ball further forward in your stance, you should open the club face more. You do this because since you have a better lie, you don’t need to take as much sand when you hit the bunker shot and taking less sand means you can put more spin on the ball and hit a higher, softer landing shot.
  • If you open the club face more you need to aim further to the left (or to the right if you are left-handed). This is because a more open club face will cause the ball to go in the direction of the club face, make sure that the face is pointing towards your target.
  • If you close the club face more you need to aim closer to your target – you should never aim to the right of your target (or the left of your target if you are left-handed) as this can cause you to cut across the ball and dig into the sand, resulting in a bad bunker shot.
  • The more swing speed you have, the higher the shot will go. A shot with more swing speed will also have more spin and stop quicker on the green.

Follow and apply these sand shot laws to your golf game to improve your bunker consistency and improve your game. Good luck and happy golfing.

Why It’s So Important For Players to Study the Game of Basketball

We always hear analysts talk about studying the game of basketball and how it can help make you a better player but what are they really talking about. Does that mean that we should study basketball like we study our school work? Here are some ideas that can be used to help increase your knowledge in our great game of basketball.

1. Watch the game differently: Instead of watching the game for the enjoyment of it, try to watch the game from a different perspective. Identify the offense and defense that is being run. If you are a younger player then you first should just identify if the defense is a man-to-man or a zone. Once you understand that then try to identify what type of zone defense is being played. Is it a 1-3-1 or a 2-3 or a 1-2-2 or a 3-2? In order to really start to learn the game make sure you watch the game from a different perspective. That way when you play you’ll be more aware of what is going on.

2. Learn from others: To learn about the game it is important to get as many different perspectives as possible. That means to study all the different ideas from different coaches out there. There is a ton of great reading material on John Wooden, who is considered the greatest coach of all time. Read about him and his philosophies. Coach K is a great coach and there is a ton of great stuff on him as well. Read about his coaching theories and his thoughts on teams and players. If guys like him are willing to share their knowledge then you’d be dumb not to read it. Many coaches make videos or training books with their ideas available.

3. Use the Internet: When I was younger the internet didn’t exist and to get basketball training articles or drills we had to use connections or phonebooks to try to track stuff down. It wasn’t easy. Now you have everything at your disposal including your phones. I have a smart phone and I know there are apps today that show you drill that you can use to help you get better. YouTube has thousands of ideas and websites like ours really give you an edge that I didn’t have. Use the resources that are available to you.

Badminton Training Tips

Have you ever struggled to return a shot if the shuttle was hit toward the backcourt area? Most of the time, it is tiring, if not difficult, to return a shot targeted at the backcourt, especially if you are positioned near the net, or if the shuttle moves at a high speed. It can be frustrating if this happens to you, and sometimes it will leave you feeling helpless and discouraged, thinking: “how can I return such a shot?”

One of the ways to return a shot to the backcourt is to get into position quickly. For a right handed player receiving a shot to the right backcourt area, the first step is to turn the body in such a way that the torso faces toward the right side of the court and to make a small step with the right foot so that the right leg is positioned toward the area where the shuttle is anticipated to land. After this initial step, the left foot crosses the back/front of the right foot and the whole body begins to move toward the anticipated landing area.

Then, the right foot takes one more step. At this point, depending on where the shuttle is, the player can already hit the shuttle, or, make a smash or jump smash. If the player chooses to already hit the shuttle, the toe should be pointed away from the center of the court (which is the returning position) to enable the player to return quickly. If the player will follow a smashing process instead, the right foot should end up in front of the body pointing toward the center with the left foot behind and slightly stretched, again to enable the player to return quickly.

One of the most important parts of this process is the very first turn. If you do this part correctly, it will be easier for the rest of the process to follow. Also remember that while the process is described as a series of steps, the entire movement should be smooth and continuous.

This type of footwork can be modified to fit the situation. One alternative will be to jump early with the left foot, instead of taking one more step with the right foot. Jumping and hitting the shuttle high is preferred since with this stroke you can make an attacking move, like a smash or a drop. Keep in mind that it is always better to hit the shuttle high, and that the main point of good footwork is to get to the shuttle as quickly as possible to do this.
